OwlHound vs Uptime Kuma: an honest comparison
Uptime Kuma is a popular open-source monitoring tool you install on your own server. OwlHound is hosted — nothing to install, patch or keep alive. We use Uptime Kuma ourselves for OwlHound's own status page, so this comparison is from experience.
The quick take
Choose Uptime Kuma if you're comfortable running a server and want free, unlimited monitors with full control. Choose OwlHound if you'd rather not run monitoring infrastructure — especially since a self-hosted monitor is only as reliable as the server it runs on.

Where OwlHound is the better fit
- Nothing to host. No server to patch, no database to back up, no container to restart.
- Independent of your infrastructure. A monitor on the same host as your site can go down with it; a hosted one keeps watching.
- Alert confirmation, SSL and domain expiry, competitor price tracking and white-label weekly reports are built in.
- Someone else's on-call — if the monitor breaks, it's our job to notice.
Where Uptime Kuma is the better fit
- Free and unlimited monitors if you can host it.
- Many monitor types and notification channels, plus full control over your data.
- Status pages on your own domain.
- Open source — inspect, modify and self-audit.
Pricing
Uptime Kuma costs nothing to download; you pay for a server (a small VPS is enough) and for the time to maintain it. OwlHound plans run from $19 to $79 a month with a 7-day trial from $2. See OwlHound pricing.
What OwlHound doesn't do (yet)
To be straight about it: OwlHound runs HTTP(S) checks every 5 minutes from one location, alerts by email and optional Slack or Discord (no SMS or phone calls), and has no public API or free plan. If those matter to you, that's a fair reason to choose a different tool — and it's why we publish these comparisons.
Frequently asked questions
Is Uptime Kuma reliable?
The software is solid and widely used. The weak point is where you run it: if the server hosting Uptime Kuma goes down or loses network, your monitoring goes with it and nobody is told.
Can I use both?
Yes, and it's a good pattern: self-host Kuma for detailed internal checks and use a hosted monitor as an independent outside view.
Do you really use Uptime Kuma?
Yes. OwlHound's public status page at status.owlhound.com runs on Uptime Kuma.
